DIY Chalkboard Props: 7 Ways

I mentioned the other day that my friends and I made something out of recycled materials at our  craft night this weekend. It was a super simple project that people could really easily customize to make totally different items using only cardboard from old boxes and chalkboard paint. Here are a few of the different things my friends made, and a few that I made on my own.

1. Comic book prop:  Pow! Blam! Kaboom! Write any exclamation on this pointy cutout and then you can use it to have a fun photoshoot with friends.

2. Glasses Prop: This is another cute cutout you could use for photoshoots. Just cut your cardboard into the shape of glasses and you can even draw different kinds of eyes - shifty eyes, flirty eyes, angry eyes, etc.

3. Photo Frame: Cut out a simple frame that fits over whatever photo you'd like to use, then you can either glue it to a cardboard back or even stick on some magnets and display the photo on your fridge.

4. Polaroid Frame: Polaroid pictures with the little bottom section you could write on were just so convenient. Recreate that with this bottom-heavy cutout. Again, you can secure your photo with a cardboard back or magnets.

5. Heart Cutout: This is just a simple shape that would be fun to display around your home. You can recreate this with any shape, but a heart is fun because you can write lyrics, notes, or sweet quotes from your favorite book (HG, anyone?)

6. Talk Bubble Prop: Can you guys tell I like photobooth props? This one is pretty self-explanatory.

7. Photo background: This one is the same idea as the photo frame, but it's just a basic rectangle and you can put any size photo on top of it, depending on how much room you need for chalk drawings (please don't judge me too harshly for my terrible attempt at chalk palm trees).

It's amazing how many different things you can make with just a couple simple supplies. Do you have any other ideas to share?

Butterbeer Recipe

To celebrate the birthdays of Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling, I've decided to finally post my recipe for homemade butterbeer! I made this recipe last year at a Harry Potter party, and though it's not quite as great as what they serve at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, I thought it was still fairly delicious.

Photos by Katelyn

So if you're planning on having your own Harry Potter party anytime soon (a birthday party, perhaps?) or if you just want to enjoy some deliciously sweet butterbeer on your own, here's an easy recipe for you to try.

Ingredients:
  • One packet of butterscotch instant pudding
  • One cup milk
  • Two scoops of vanilla bean ice cream
  • 3 cups root beer
  • 3 cups cream soda

Combine the instant pudding mix with the milk, and then combine all of the ingredients in a blender and enjoy. Feel free to play around with different measurements too. I'd love to hear if you have your own butterbeer recipe!

And happy birthday to Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling!!

Fondue Night

This weekend my girlfriends and I got together for our monthly craft night. I made some cheese fondue in my "new" vintage fondue pot, and my friends brought over some vegetables and bread for dipping. We watched some of the Olympics and then turned on The Princess Diaries. We also made a craft (duh) out of some old boxes I had lying around, but I'll elaborate that on my post tomorrow.

Though it is a book club, we sort of fell off-track with our reading list this month. Do you have any good books to recommend for future meetings?

5-Minute Lamp Re-Style

Since I moved into my apartment this spring, I've been struggling to come up with a defined "style" for my living room. I have every other room pretty well figured out, but for some reason my living room has just been this place where I put all the stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else. Just recently, I've decided to embrace the eclectic space it's become and just make everything a little more fun and colorful. So as I try to cover up all the boring parts, I knew that I'd definitely need to do something about my plain white lamps.

Luckily, I had some fun polka dot tape that I bought with my Smash Book journal, and that made dressing up my lamps super easy. All you need is some boring lamps and any kind of patterned tape. Some hot glue couldn't hurt either, if your tape's adhesive isn't that strong.

Carefully wrap the tape around the top and the bottom rim of the lampshade. Secure it with glue if you need to.  You can even put some tape going up and down the corners of the lampshade, but I decided that I preferred mine without. That's all you need to do! Now my lampshades are much more fun.

WWII Victory Rally

Last weekend, a group of friends and I went to a new event in my town where we got to dress up in 1940's clothes, listen to big band music, and celebrate an important historical event (ok, maybe I shouldn't have ended with that one, but it was actually really cool). Get ready for a picture-heavy post.

So there was an entire historical exhibit around the hall, a dance floor, food, a band, old movies projected on a curtain, multiple bars and food stands, and probably a lot more that I'm forgetting. Overall, it was so much fun, plus it gave me an excuse to get out my favorite vintage dress and accessories. I'm also weighing the possibility of doing victory rolls in my hair all the time. Do you have any favorite events that take place in your town?
