December Wrapup

Happy New Year's Eve! I'm sorry I've been a complete stranger to this blog this month. I would say I've been busy, but really it's mostly because I completely lost my motivation. But I am back and plan to blog regularly again starting now. Anyway, over December I took a trip to Disney World, ate some good food, tried to enjoy the holiday season, and spent time with friends. I hope you all had a good month and I hope 2013 is even better!

And some goals for January:
  • Get back into blogging regularly
  • Start doing yoga again
  • Don't completely give into the annual winter hermit lifestyle

DIY Simple Styrofoam Snowmen

These little snowmen are really cute decorations to put around during the holiday season, and they're so easy. All you need are two or three styrofoam balls in different sizes, scissors, hot glue, and a couple of yarn scraps.

Start by cutting into the sytrofoam just a bit to make a flat surface. You'll need to do this on two opposite ends of the sphere except for the smallest one, which will just need one flat surface. You could even use sandpaper if you find that easier than scissors. Glue the two or three pieces together and let it dry. Then, using your glue gun, create eyes, a nose, and some button embellishments on the front of the snowman. You can paint over these later if you want to, but I kind of like the way they look as is.

Then take a short scrap of yarn and wrap it around the neck a few times to make a scarf. Glue it and place and you're done! You can continue adding other embellishments like a hat and arms if you'd like, but I think these are just really simple and cute without anything else.

What I Wore: Lazy Winter

I haven't been feeling super thrilled about my wardrobe lately. I've been spending a lot of time in sweats, which is actually pretty rare for me considering I work at home. But right now all I really want to wear is anything oversized and comfortable like t-shirt dresses and big sweaters. Do you get like that at the start of winter too?

The Piemaker

I said in my fall goals post earlier this year that I wanted to bake at least three pies - that didn't exactly happen during the fall, as I just finished two of them this weekend, but I did do it!

I ended up making another apple pie, which turned out just as delicious as the first one I made, along with a cherry and a lemon "meringue." For the cherry pie, we used a pre-made filling so it wasn't exactly homemade. But my mom made a crumb top from scratch, which I hadn't ever tried before, and it was really good. I tried to make a lemon meringue pie completely from scratch, but my meringue didn't actually meringue so it was more like a lemon pie with some sugary stuff on top. It still tasted good, but it looked kind of weird.

I think pies are probably my favorite things to bake, and I definitely plan to make a couple more this winter. Do you have any pie making experiences?

Over The Weekend

Over the weekend, I spent a lot of time in Detroit with friends. We went to the 40th annual Noel Night in Midtown, where there was shopping, art, lots of Christmassy things, and best of all: food trucks. I got some fried macaroni and cheese that was just as heavenly as it sounds.

We also went to brunch and the Detroit Urban Craft Fair the next day. I got some cool stuff for my apartment at both Noel Night and DUCF: Pantone note cards, letterpress magnets, a few cute canvases to hang on the walls, and a print of a fox knitting (obviously...)

Since I've been kind of a hermit lately I just wanted to share some of my ventures outside my home. I'm hoping to keep taking advantage of all the cool events around town throughout the rest of the season. How was your weekend?
