Inspiration Workshop: Vintage

I was so happy to see this week's prompt from Gussy's Inspiration Workshop! It's one that's so close to my heart! I've always loved and appreciated old things. History was one of my favorite subjects and I could not get enough of my grandma's costume jewelry collection. Now, I have a pretty sizable collection of vintage goodness and even a vintage shop!

green vintage hat

This weekend, I made a trip to an antique mall and picked up some great stuff. I think this hat was my favorite find of the day, so it's the one I'm sharing. I'll do a post with the rest later after I've had time to photograph them. And in September I'm going to make the vintage shop one of my main focuses so I'll have lots of quirky stuff to sell. I can't wait!

What's your favorite vintage possession?

Walking Target Ad

I love supporting local and small businesses by buying handmade/vintage clothing and accessories. BUT I'm a girl on a budget and sometimes it's just nice to head over to the clearance section and picking up an $8 dress when you're at the store buying toilet paper or batteries or something.

target outfit

That's why I love Target. They offer so many simple/stylish clothes and accessories, so I often go there for staples like cardigans or plain dresses that I can dress up with handmade accessories. That's not really what I did here. I went to Target for toilet paper and came out with basically this whole outfit. I bet that's happened to you before.

So this is my almost-entirely-from-Target-outfit. With a few exceptions, including this vintage picnic basket that my parents bought and I thought it was just too cute.

Dreaming of Autumn

I can already tell you guys that you're going to be so tired of me saying how excited I am about fall. I just love everything about this season and cannot wait to celebrate all the cool weather festivities. Here are just some of my favorite things about autumn and a few new things I'm excited for this year:

via

apple orchards // carving pumpkins // chai tea lattes // tights // dreaming of halloween costumes // leaving the windows open // scarves // pretty leaves and jumping in them // cinnamon flavored everything // county fairs // making apple pies from scratch // boots // corn mazes // petting zoos // working on my shops // so many autumn DIYs // always knowing that Christmas is just around the corner // apple bread, apple cider, apple everything // knitting even more than usual

What kinds of things remind you of autumn? And what fun things do you have planned for the next few months??

Lake Vacation Photos

Hi friends! I'm back from a much needed weekend getaway with friends. We went to my friend's family lake house in Michigan, as we do every year. It was great to get away from work and just have fun and not worry about any adult life stuff. Here are some photos from the trip:

I spent my mornings outside on the deck, reading and knitting.

And this dog came to visit me. His name is Buddy.

We played a lot of ladderball and some other outdoor games.

And found this tandem bike that got a lot of use over the weekend.

We had so many dance parties.

And wore crazy outfits. (The closets at this lake house have so many old clothes that are hilarious, and some that I legitimately want to take home and wear)

Then we wore the crazy clothes AND rode the tandem bike. Obviously.

And at night we had bonfires and played around with sparklers.

It was a great weekend. I'm sure I'll share some more photos in future posts, but I just wanted to give you a glimpse of my weekend through instagrams. So what did you all do this weekend??

Inspiration Workshop: Yellow

This week's prompt for Gussy's Inspiration Workshop is: your favorite color. If you know me at all, you know I'm obsessed with yellow. It's just so happy and bright and I think it goes well with pretty much everything. My current favorite combo is yellow mixed with shades of blues and browns. Here's my inspiration board:

Life on the Road

I'm back in the land of business casual attire lately. And when I say casual, I mean that it really has to be comfortable because I work long days and spend hours and hours in my car.

I feel so backed up on so many projects. If I owe you an email: I'm sorry! I will get to it soon - I'm going on vacation this week which means time to play catch-up. Once I'm done with this job in a few weeks, life will go back to normal and it will all have been worth it. I just have to remind myself of that when I sit here at 11pm writing after working since 7am. I hope this post doesn't seem too whiny. I really am happy still, I promise. I just can't wait to get back to blogging more often, re-opening my shop, and working more human hours. Yay!

Guest Post: Etsy Fashion with Rambles with Reese

Hi Guys! I'm Reese from Rambles with Reese and I'm so happy to be writing a guest post for Annie here at Wattlebird. I adore Annie's blog and her eclectic style, and always look forward to her outfit posts. So, I thought, why not follow that up and talk about fashion - fashion that is different, unique , makes a statement, and also supports handmade products?

So, off I went to Etsy to share with you some of the amazing shops and designers that make and sell quality clothes at affordable prices.

How chic is this elegant, airforce blue dress is from heartmycloset?

I adore the way this ethereal, silk chiffon dress flows, and the way this inspired Nepalese sari maxi skirt moves from idea2lifestyle.

This 50s style cocktail dress from elegance50s is just gorgeous! It reminds me of the iconic white dress that Marilyn Monroe wore in The Seven Year Itch.

Something fun and light for summer is this straight cut, cotton jersey dress by patriciavalery.

Who knew that Etsy offers some amazing wedding dresses - vintage and new? This silk vintage dress from porschesplace reminds me of old star glamour and evokes images of Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. And if I could get married again, rather than shop at a traditional bridal shop. I would shop at bridalbrickrow. The designer makes gorgeous, modern dresses with a twist, and this stunning, strapless, lace wedding gown would definitely make a statement.

And let's not forget a little outfit for the little one in your life. This sweet hummingbird kimono by SunLoveShirts is just too adorable. I wish they made these for adults.

If you have a little girl, niece or granddaughter, how much would she adore this combined dress set for herself and her little dolly from pocketfullofposies?

What do you think of Etsy fashion?

I hope you all enjoyed this post!
Thanks for having me Annie!

Thanks so much for posting, Reese! I think that blue dress is calling my name. Off to check it out! Everyone make sure to stop by Reese's blog and say hi!

Guest Post: A Day in the Life with Charmingly Ordinary

Hi, ya’ll!

I can say “ya’ll” because I am writing to you from North Florida, which is practically South Georgia. It’s a blurry line.

But seriously, I am so excited to be here with you lovelies, because I am such a huge fan of Annie. Isn’t she just hilarious? I laugh out loud at pretty much every post. Anyway, here it is: a hot day in the life of me, new mama to Levi and underachieving grad student.

This is how I begin most days: a bottle and a to-do list. Top priorities for this day included scheduling a Salvation Army pick up (because apparently my garage could have been featured on an episode of Hoarders), changing Levi’s doctor’s appointment (he has a very busy schedule), and purchasing half and half at the grocery store.

Then we play for a bit. Here are the many faces of Levi playing. Isn’t he adorbs?

While Levi plays, I make several trips to the microwave in a desperate attempt to finish a hot mug of coffee. It is usually an unsuccessful effort and ends with me giving up and chugging half of a cold cup.

Then Levi naps, and I sit on the couch watching Regis and Kelly study.

The title of this book is a misnomer. It should really be titled “The End of Any Hopes You Had of Understanding What I am Talking About.” Seriously, I am half way through with this book and have no idea what is going on.

Good thing my professor is really laid-back and writes emails like this to the class.

A little while later, Levi and I go to the grocery store. Yep, this family right here cloth diapers and hauls their food home in reusable bags. We are practically living a carbon-neutral life “off the grid.”

Phew. We made it to the afternoon. Levi takes another nap.

This is my backyard. This bush makes me smile. It is dripping with blooms right now.

Snack of exhausted mommies. I indulge while driving to meet the hubs to make the baby trade before class.

After I say goodbye to Levi in a shopping mall parking lot near campus, I manage to score a rock star parking spot near my class (it’s the little things, people) and eat dinner in my car. I am pretty sure this is not what Natalie Portman was doing when she was at Harvard.

Dinner: grocery store sushi, blackberries, and the rest of my iced latte.

I hope this photo doesn’t make any of you sick.

And then I head to class and wait in the hallway for the professor. I proceed to spend the hours of 6:10 to 9:40 pm trying to stay awake, nodding in hesitant agreement at whatever the guy is talking about, and doodling flowers and sh*t on my notes.

I’m tired.
So who’s up next?! I can’t wait!

Thanks so much for posting, Jamie! I love seeing how other bloggers spend their days. And Levi is sooooo adorable! Everyone make sure to stop by Jamie's blog and say hi!

4 Silly Questions with Tiny Little Happies

This week's silly interview is courtesy of Chrissy at Tiny Little Happies. Chrissy blogs about everything under the sun and is a "firm believer in the coolness of bow ties." Right on. Let's hear her thoughts on pizza toppings, shall we?

What type of zoo animal would you most like to have as a pet? i kinda want to go with "sloth" on this one.  they sound like pretty low maintenance.  what do they need?  food, water and a branch?  plus, cute as all get out.

What is your favorite scary movie? totally not scary but one of the greatest follower of zombie movie rules is 'planet terror'.  government experiment gone wrong,  four percent of the population immunity, unaffected land, love story and... gun leg?  heck yeah!

What kind of toppings do you usually get on your pizza? Flavored/stuffed crust or anything else fancy? must have mushrooms!  must not have green peppers!  anything else goes.  {within reason of course.  for instance, no snake tails, please.}

Who would win in a fight between Indiana Jones and Jet Li? sorry indie, but jet has this one.  it doesn't matter how quickly mr. jones can mcgyver something out of a rock and a rope, jet has speed and experience with interdimensional time travel on his side.

Thanks for participating, Chrissy! (don't forget to visit her blog!) I'm a little backed up on emails for this feature right now, so if you've emailed me wanting to participate - I haven't forgotten about you! I promise I'll get around to it soon! For the time being, feel free to answer any of the above questions in the comments below.

Inspiration Workshop: The Front Porch

In my future dream house, I have a lot of wants, but none greater than a wrap-around porch. I want a place to relax with my coffee in the morning and a pitcher of lemonade during the summer. I want a little swing bench and maybe a little table and chairs. Ideally, it would be attached to an old victorian home or a country farmhouse. And ideally ideally it would have a pretty view like this one.

Wouldn't that be awesome? What are some of your "must haves" for your dream house?

Life in Lee

Several weeks ago I was approached by a representative from Lee Jeans about a little photography/fashion contest they were hosting called Life in Lee. It's pretty simple: just take a picture wearing some Lee Jeans styled in your own unique way.

life in lee

I love my new black skinny jeans (even though I rarely wear jeans). I chose this outfit because it has a lot of different elements that I love: vintage, handmade, retro styles, and pops of color.

So here's the deal. I need your help deciding which photo to submit. I'm torn between the following two photos:
