New Stuff!

Okay, I'm pretty swamped today, so I don't have a lot of time to do a real blog post (tomorrow - promise!) but I do have time to let you know about a few small changes to the blog.

I added a whole new list of features here. I'm really excited about all the new posts, photos and features!

I also updated the inspiration page with lots of new links for your crafty/design/vintage enjoyment.

Take a look and have a great rest of the day! I'll be bringing you one of the new features tomorrow morning.

Pretty Tattoos

I love all kinds of art. And I think tattoos are a really unique way to show off some of your interests with some really great art. I have 3 myself, but I want more. I'm always looking at pictures of pretty tattoos, so I thought I should share some of them.

I really want a crafty tattoo next, but I also really want a Harry Potter one. Do you have any or want any?

Sometimes You Just Gotta Fly

Sometimes I wonder how people who make prints think of their clever little sayings. I thought this one was pretty cute.

It's from Christian of Delicious Ink. Christian is new to Etsy, but has some cute designs that would work well in kids' rooms. Check it out!

Vintage Treasures, Part 1

A few weeks ago, my parents decided to dig up some of the forgotten goodies from their basement. My grandparents used to live in this house, and they were pretty hip back in the day, so I was pretty confident that they'd find some neat things.

And I was right! This is just a preview of SOME of the things we found. Some hold more sentimental value than anything, and some are just plain awesome. Momma bear and poppa bear were kind enough to let me obtain ownership of a few things to sell in my soon-to-open vintage shop. Here are just a few of the things to come.

I'm still debating about selling this. I think it's so cool and I'd love to find a use for it. But I'm just not sure if it's practical for me to keep it, and I'm trying to stop being such a pack rat. We'll see...

This is an old manicure supply box that belonged to my great-grandma. She had some nail clippers and other stuff still in there (it is no longer there - no worries) but I just thought it would make a really cute box for sewing notions or jewelry.

I love me some kitchen kitsch. We actually found a few of these circus-colored tea towels with little embroidered animals. These elephants were my favorite, but there are also some bunnies!

I'm already a fan of vintage cameras. I found a few of them earlier this year - including an old polaroid and a video camera, but I talked my parents into keeping those. This little do-dad will be hitting the internet soon though :)

Well, I hope you enjoyed that little tour through my basement. Do you have any hidden treasures or fun family heirlooms hidden in your home?

I had a really good day yesterday

I mean, I have pretty good days every day, but yesterday was just a bit more awesome than the rest of the days. Here's the run-down.

I woke up around 7, and immediately began working on some freelance work for a local newspaper. I make a deal with myself that whenever I finish writing a 1/4 ad, I can take an internet break for 10 minutes. During one of these breaks, I checked my bloglines feed. I'm scrolling through the goodness that is CraftZine, and stumble across my face!

Yep, that's me, dressed as Slinky Dog, in CraftZine, something I've read daily for years. It was pretty neat. While I was on this awesome-kick, I decided to see if I could keep the streak going, so I went over to Tumblr.  And there was me again, on the Pixar Movies Tumblr

I know, I'm pretty easily amused, but it's the little things in life that make it so much fun. Oh, and speaking of (not) little, my big fat lovable dog is featured on The Curious Pug this week. Max is getting a bit of a diva complex now that he's on the internet and stuff.

So there you go. That was my good day - all thanks to a slinky and a crappy photobooth picture I took on my couch.

How About A Picnic?

On of my favorite things about summertime is eating outside. Picnics are so much fun, whether you're with just one person or a whole group. I really really really want to go on a picnic soon! For now, I'll just have to settle for this blog-picnic. Won't you join me?

{the invite}
This invitation from aloucreations is perfect. By all means not a necessity, giving someone an invitation is just a cute way of making your picnic that much more fun and special.

{what to wear}
How sweet is this picnic dress from LaMadeleine? The color, the shape, everything - perfect for an afternoon picnic at the park.

{what to carry}
Sure, you could use just any old picnic basket to hold all of your goodies, but why, when you could use this super-adorable decoupage one from Isadoree?

{to hold your sandwiches}
What's a picnic without sandwiches? You have to have them, and this reusable sandwich bag from Bagitconscious is a great way to hold your favorite picnic food without creating unnecessary garbage.

{where to sit}
This blanket from SewnNatural would make a wonderful setting for your wonderful afternoon of sitting and eating and eating and sitting.

I hope you had fun at my little blog-picnic. I did. But now it's time to gather some folks and have a real one. Have you had any fun picnics so far this summer?

Toy Story 3!

I went to see Toy Story 3 last night, and it was beyond amazing - honestly one of the best movies I've seen in a very, very long time. I laughed, I cried, and then I cried some more. It surpassed every one of my already-high expectations. Plus, I had so much fun. All of my 20-something friends and I dressed up as characters. It's nice to NOT act your age every once in awhile.

And now, without further ado: PICTURES!!

I was Slinky dog. I actually attached a slinky to my knit hat, and then I knit a little butt to go on the end.

My friend Jordan and her boyfriend Chris dressed as Barbie and Ken. Weren't their outfits perfect?

My friend Cory reluctantly dressed up as Woody. I made that cow-print vest out of an old t-shirt and some finger paint.

Katelyn was Bo-Peep. She made her staff out of some old wrapping paper tubes, and carried around that adorable sheep all night.

These are all of the hats I made for the event. Drew is wearing Rex. Whitney is wearing an alien hat. And Alyssa is Hamm (I also knit her some hooves).

Everyone!!! We had so much fun. If you never dress in costumes and go to the movies, I highly recommend it. It really is a lot of fun.

Toy Story Concept Art

Alright, alright, I'm a little obsessed with Toy Story. I'm also a little obsessed with concept art. I can remember going to the art stores in Disney World when I was little and being amazed by the early illustrations of some of my favorite animated characters. My family even collected some of the art from some favorite films.

Have I mentioned that I'm super excited to see the new movie? Oh, I am!

Expecto Patronum!

To celebrate my new blog name, I've decided to create a Harry Potter post. Yes, the name wattlebird is from Harry Potter. It is a password to get into the Gryffindor common room in the second book. Yes, I am that obsessed with Harry Potter.

I am also kind of obsessed with these necklaces by spacepearls.

It doesn't stop there. Amortentia, Wolfsbane, draught of the living dead, polyjuice potion, and more are all accounted for in this awesome shop. There are also some Twilight, Alice in Wonderland, and Disney goodies.

I'm in love. bye.

New name, same blog

Sorry if any of you are confused by the changes I've been making to this blog. Yes, I have changed the name and a lot of the design elements (but that's pretty standard practice around here anyway). I just feel a lot more connected to the wattlebird name than I did with annie banana (even though it has my actual name in it).

I was using wattlebird for another blog, but have since stopped posting there. And it seems a shame to me for that name to go to waste (though it is also the name of my shop). So, there you have it. Nothing big has changed - just a name and some trivial design changes. I'm still Annie Banana, and this blog will continue to bring you lots of crafty goodness and nonsensical ramblings.

P.S. extra points to the person who can tell me where "wattlebird" comes from. Hint: something nerdy that I talk about fairly regularly in this blog. I'll be really happy if someone guesses correctly.

Toy Story Hats

If you haven't been living under a rock this week, then you'll know Toy Story 3 comes out on Friday. I'm soooooooooooooo excited. I love both of the previous Toy Story movies and all of the characters. Some friends and I are going to see Toy Story 3 at midnight when it comes out, and we're huge nerds so we're dressing up.

Sooo.... I obviously made some hats for the occasion. I have 3 so far: Slinky Dog, Hamm and Rex. I'm working on one or two more before Thursday. I'll obviously be sharing photos of all of our costumes on Friday. But for now, enjoy these crappy Photobooth previews.

Shop Local: New York City

Time for another Shop Local! Today we're heading to NYC to visit a few wonderful Etsy friends. I love New York and I love all of these shops, so I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

You know I have a special place in my heart for fun kids' hats! This shop has so many adorable choices for babies and children.

This shop has some really beautiful jewelry and hair accessories. Everything is so elegant but unique at the same time. Love!

This shop has the cutest bags, purses and clutches. The fabric is so vibrant and fun, and there are so many different styles to choose from.

I love this shop so much. She has all kinds of adorable illustrations, and they're sold in all forms - little cards, sets, pins, and regular prints. Oh, and that little elephant is making its second appearance on my blog, because I just love it so much :)

Game Time

Happy Monday! I hope the weekend treated you well. I had a pretty productive one. I listed some new items on Etsy (finally), and I came up with a fun new feature for my shop.

Since most of my items are hats that look like animals or characters of some kind, I decided they should have names. I do like naming things, but I thought it might be more fun if I let some friends in on the action as well. So this week, I started using Twitter as a tool for naming my new items. I simply post a picture of each new hat, and ask my followers to come up with a name. The first to respond wins, and I put their twitter username in the listing. So far, I've got an owl named Twickenham, an elephant named Weebles, and a chick named Eggy Gaga

I have some old hats that are currently listed that I'd also like to name. If you have an idea, comment on this post and leave your twitter username so I can credit you in the listing. Here they are:
