Blog Re-Vamp

So, as I said earlier in the week, this blog is getting a bit of a new look. It's fairly subtle, but I changed the banner, the color of the background image and some of the accent colors. I also added some swanky new banners to the sidebar. I love designing new blog elements, so this is really fun for me and something that happens fairly often.

But I obviously care what you think too. If you have any suggestions or thoughts on the new (or old) look, just leave me a comment or shoot me an email. I love hearing from you!

I'm still working on that master list of creative and inspiring links (next week - promise!) as well as a new giveaway and editorial calendar for May. I'll be calling for submissions for next month in the next several days, but as always, you can submit anything at any time.

Later, gators!

Please come dive in puddles with me

So I've been a little too excited about rain-themed art this April. To be clear, I do not like rain, except for the occasional evening thunderstorm or afternoon mist, but there's just something about raindrops, boots, and umbrellas that I just love.

So I'm obviously a huge fan of these "wellies" prints by Nicole of Sloe Gin Fizz.  Nicole is an illustrator based in Ann Arbor, Michigan (one of my very favorite places!) To see more of her work, you can visit her shop, blog, or twitter.

Now that May is right around the corner, I should start focusing more on flowers and less on showers, but I can't make any promises...

Later, Lady

I've said it before - we all have our guilty pleasures. One of mine is definitely American Idol. If you're also a fan, then you probably know that this wacky gal went home last night.

She definitely had some pipes, but I most admired her for her really really courageous wardrobe. I can't say I would ever wear 90% of her getups, but she definitely wore her crazy garments with pride - and you've gotta admire that.

So farewell, Siobhan. I'm sure I'll be seeing you and your Motown jams and cutoff denim vests around the music world.

What I Want Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Okay, so I'm really really really excited this week, because some friends and I finally started planning our trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park that is scheduled to open in Orlando this summer.

I pretty much can't stop thinking about it and planning for it. So this week, what I want most is for October to get here so I can drink butterbeer, visit Hogsmeade and get my very own wand! I hope I get a unicorn hair wand!

So what are you looking forward to? And is anyone else a ridiculous HP fan like me?

Too Cute

Remember these R2D2 and C3PO droids? This is my little cousin who I made them for. His mom sent this picture to me and it put an instant smile on my face.

He loves them! Yay!

Happy Monday!

It's raining here, and everything is so gray and gloomy. So I just wanted to share a happy post with you quickly before I leave for work.

Yes, that is an evil monkey hat. I hope you all manage to have a decent Monday!

Lovely Weekend Update

Why hello there! I've been away from the computer more than usual this weekend. I've got a lot of things going on right now with my day jobs, but I've also got some pretty excited changes coming to this blog within the next few days. I don't want to give too much away, but you can expect some design changes very soon, as well as a huge database of some of my favorite tutorials, photos, and blog posts from my favorite pretty sites. I'm really excited about it, and I hope it's something that you all will find useful and fun.

So for now, that's it for me. I've got a lot of work to do! I hope you're all having a lovely weekend.

Shoe Shopping

Okay, we've all got our weaknesses when it comes to shopping. For me, I cannot ever just walk past an aisle of shoes. That would be madness! I love all kinds of shoes, really - flats, heels, sandals, boots. I love them all. And you already know I love all things vintage, so I really really really like all of these finds. I hope you enjoy them as well!

A Creative Slump

Hi, friends. I'm feeling a bit 'blah' lately. I know everyone goes through these funks every now and again, so I'm sure you all know exactly what I'm talking about. I'm feeling so uninspired right now. Nothing is catching my eye, and I feel like I have no time to really create anything.

What helps you when you're in a creative slump? How do you stay inspired on a day to day basis?

In addition, if any of you have artwork or anything creative you'd like to share with me, please send me an email. I'd love to take a look.

I hope you're all having a good Thursday!

What I Want Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Hello humans, hobbits, wizards, elves, dwarves, or whatever else you might be. Today we're taking a trip to Middle Earth for a super magical and epic What I Want Wednesday.

I've been slowly making my way through the Lord of the Rings books, and I'm a huge fan of the whole series. The movies are absolutely fantastic. So I took a look at some shops that sell LOTR inspired goodies, and now I'm sharing them with you!

DIY Business Cards

Hi, friends! Today, for Tutorial Tuesday, I'm sharing a project with you from Elizabeth [EV Photo Chic]. If you'll recall, she also shared some freebies with us earlier this month. Now she's got a really useful tutorial for you. I really think you're going to like it!

{DIY Business Cards}

Many of you are small business owners, or aspiring small business owners. Part of running your small creative business is creating a strong brand image. For that, you'll need a few staples. One very important thing that many people don't think about right away is business cards and tags. This tutorial will give you a good base for getting started. For even more insight, please visit Elizabeth's blog.

What You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Printer
  • Avery Clear Custom Labels
  • Shipping Tags

Steps:
  • Create a 4x6 document in photoshop or another image editing software
  • Play around with the layout to create your desired label size and design
  • Once you've created your label, copy and paste the labels into a larger document (8x10) so that the document is almost full
  • Adjust your printer settings if necessary (these cards were printed on 8 1/2 x 11 paper on the luster paper setting)
  • Use a straight edge and exacto knife to cut the cards
  • Peel the labels off the backing and stick them onto shipping labels
  • Add a personal touch! Use ribbon, yarn, or whatever to attach your tags

I really think these turned out so well. I have business cards, but they're not quite this cute. I think I'm definitely going to try this one out. You should too!

Current Obsession: Share Some Candy

Every once in awhile, I stumble across a website that causes me to drop whatever I'm doing and browse pretty design work for hours on end. This week, my obsession has been Share Some Candy, a mecca of design awesomeness and other pretty things.

They have typography, illustration, photography, furniture design, and so much more. Seriously, this is like crack to me. Here are just a few of my favorite finds. [all images credited to sharesomecandy.com]

Do you have any website obsessions right now?

Lovely Weekend Painting

Lookie what I found when I was cleaning my room: this painting I made in high school art class.

I really like this one. It's got a few imperfections that I've since learned more about avoiding, but I love the colors and everything. I might even try to fix some of the imperfections and put this one on display.

I hope you're all having a lovely weekend!

Poll Results

Hi friends! I just want to check in and give you an update on the results of my giveaway poll last week. Drum roll please...

The most voted for item was art prints (by quite a bit), followed by handmade jewelry. Then there was a 3-way tie between scarves, toys and hats. Sooooo sometime in the next few weeks, you can expect to see a giveaway with some art prints. Keep checking in.

Oh, and thanks so much to everyone who voted! I really appreciate the input.

Olive Juice

Friday Friday Friday! AKA vintage fun day here at Annie Banana. Today I am loving everything olive green, and Etsy has no shortage of olive greeny goodness for my vintage amusement. Take a gander at some favorites.

Swaddled in Awareness

April is Autism Awareness Month, so I've been searching the depths of the Etsy-verse for shops that donate profits to Autism awareness. So far, I've found a couple - one of my favorites is Swaddled in Awareness.

This shop actually donates to several different causes, at the request of the buyer. She also sells products that are made specially for children with Autism or other special needs.

Most of the items can also be personalized to the specific child - so cute!

I really think it's great to see Etsy sellers and other small business owners raising funds and awareness for causes they feel passionate about. If you're passionate about a certain cause, I encourage you to follow in the footsteps of shops like Swaddled in Awareness, or at least support these types of shops.

The Lovely Blogger List

The other day I read about this really neat list of creative bloggers, The Lovely Blogger List, created by Rachel of Lovely Clusters. I saw it and thought, 'hey, I'm fairly creative and I have a blog.' So here it goes...

A little about me:

My name is Annie. I am a recent college grad currently living in Metro Detroit where I am a freelance writer and photographer for some newspapers. I have a few other jobs, but my passion is art. I love painting, drawing, knitting, sewing, and everything in between. Mostly, I create accessories for kids (i.e. hats that look like cartoon characters), but I also dabble in jewelry making and print designing.

The great thing about what I do is that I can do it anywhere. I take a skein of yarn and some knitting needles pretty much everywhere I go, and this little tomato pin cushion is one of my best friends.

I also tend to carry around my sketchbook, some felt, and even my laptop in case I get blog-inspired on the go.

I'm constantly inspired by so many different people and things. Since discovering the awesome creative community here in blogland a few years ago, I've met a lot of great people and discovered a lot of wonderful blogs and sites. In the non-internet world, I'm very inspired by friends and family who are so supportive of my creative endeavors and are always giving me suggestions for new projects.

And now for some links...

What I Want Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Happy Wednesday, lovelies! Today I'm re-connecting with my inner-child and picking out some pretty artwork that I wish had adorned my walls as a child. Or... maybe I still want them now. Take a looksy.

Bird Collage

Happy Tutorial Tuesday, folks! This week I tried a project I've never done before - a neat mixed-media project. I think you're really going to like it!

What you'll need:

  • scrapbook paper
  • a record frame
  • glue
  • a pencil
  • an old book OR newspaper OR magazine

Steps:

  • find a silhouette of a bird (or anything else) that you'd like to use and LIGHTLY trace it onto the scrapbook paper (I drew mine freehand - you can use the photos I have here for inspiration or just google photos)

  • tear up little pieces of the book/magazine/newspaper pages, whichever you decide to use (I used an old book)

  • glue the pages inside the outline you drew - it's easiest to start in the middle with larger pieces and then tear smaller pieces as you get to the outside
  • let it dry and frame it

Note: the book I used is vintage and is already missing some pages, so no readable books were harmed in the making of this project. Promise.
